For the first year I ran regularly, I only ever looked at two numbers when I finished: distance and total time. If the watch said 5K and 30 minutes, I filed that away as "a decent run" and moved on. I had no idea what to do with that information beyond feeling vaguely proud or vaguely disappointed. It wasn't until a friend who actually races asked me "what pace were you holding?" that I realized I'd been tracking the wrong thing the whole time.
Pace is just time divided by distance, expressed per unit — usually minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. That 30-minute 5K works out to 6 minutes per kilometer, or roughly 9:40 per mile. Once I started thinking in pace instead of raw totals, running suddenly became something I could actually plan around instead of something that just happened to me.
Why total time alone lies to you
Total time hides distance, and distance hides effort. A 40-minute run could be an easy 6K jog or a brutal 8K tempo effort — the watch tells you the same number either way. Pace strips that ambiguity out immediately. If I know I ran at 5:30/km, I know exactly how hard that run was relative to my other runs, regardless of whether I ran 4K or 14K that day.
This matters most when you're comparing runs across different distances, which is basically all the time. Comparing a 5K time to a 10K time directly is meaningless. Comparing the pace of both tells you immediately whether you held your speed up or faded as the distance grew.

Where I actually use pace now
Before a race, I work backward from a goal finish time to a target pace, then break that pace down per kilometer so I have a number to check against at every marker along the route. If my goal is a sub-50-minute 10K, that's a 5:00/km pace — and if I hit the 5K mark past 25 minutes, I know immediately I'm off target and need to adjust rather than finding out at the finish line that I missed my goal by four minutes.
During training, I use pace to keep my easy runs honest. It's tempting to run every session at roughly the same effort, but easy days are supposed to feel genuinely easy — usually 60 to 90 seconds slower per kilometer than race pace. Without a pace target, "easy" quietly drifts toward "medium" over weeks, which is one of the most common ways runners accumulate fatigue without getting faster.
Splits are pace's more honest cousin
Average pace over an entire run smooths out a lot of reality. Splits — your pace for each individual kilometer or mile — show you the shape of the run: whether you started too fast and faded, held steady, or built into a strong finish. The single most common pattern I see in my own splits, and in most runners I know, is starting the first kilometer noticeably faster than everything after it. Adrenaline and fresh legs make the first split lie to you every time.

Pace, elevation, and why flat comparisons only go so far
One thing pace doesn't account for on its own is terrain. A 5:00/km pace on a flat road and a 5:00/km pace on a route with 200 meters of climbing represent very different efforts, even though the number on the watch is identical. I've learned to mentally discount my pace on hilly routes rather than comparing them directly against flat time trials — otherwise it's easy to think you've gotten slower when you've actually just run somewhere harder.
The fix I use isn't complicated: I keep a rough mental note of which of my regular routes are flat and which aren't, and I only compare paces within the same category. It's not scientific, but it's enough to stop hill days from wrecking my sense of progress.
